What to do when your PlayStation 3 Doesn't Recognize your External Hard Drive

Check the File System

First, you will need to check which file system your external hard disk uses (FAT32 or NTFS).

1. Connect your external hard drive to your computer.

2. Open Windows Explorer or File Explorer (Windows 10).

3. Go to My Computer or This PC (the place where you can see all your drives).

4. Right-click on the hard drive and choose Properties.

5. At File system, you will see your drive's file system.

6. If the file system is NTFS, then you will need to format the hard drive to FAT32.

Note: Formatting the hard disk will erase all files on it, so it's a good idea to first create a backup of all the files stored on that drive.

Format the Hard Drive

Windows

1. Open Disk Management.

2. Right-click on your external hard drive and choose Format.

3. At File System, you select FAT32.

4. Do not select Perform a quick format.

5. Do not select Enable file and folder compression.

6. Click on OK to start formatting.

Mac Os X

1. Open Disk Utility.

2. Select your external hard drive.

3. Click on Erase.

4. Select MS-DOS (FAT) as the file system type.

5. Click on Erase to start formatting.

1. Open your external hard drive.

2. Create three folders named VIDEO, MUSIC, and PHOTO (everything in capital letters) on your external hard drive.

3. Move or copy all the files to the correct folder.
