Play Movies & Music from External Hard Drive on Playstation 3

Play Movies & Music from External Hard Drive on Playstation 3

The Playstation 3 can also be used as a media player to...

...play media such as movies, videos, music and photos from a disc, usb flash drive and even from a external hard drive.

The Sony Ps3 has an internal hard disk, but when that drive is full with media, then you need more disk space.

Now you could buy and install a new hard drive, but this can be expensive, so the best and cheapest way is to use an external hard disk.

If your Ps3 doesn't recognize the hard drive, then you need to follow the steps from method 2.

Play Media from USB Hard Drive on Ps3 Method Two

1 Connect the external hard disk to one of the two usb ports at the front of your Playstation 3.

2 Turn on your Ps3.

3 Go in the main menu to:

4 Press with the triangle Δ button of your controller on "USB Device" and choose "Display All".

5 Press with the X button of your controller on the video, movie, track or photo to play or view.

If your Ps3 doesn't recognize the hard drive, then you need to follow the steps from method 2 below.

Play Media from USB Hard Drive on Ps3 Method One

1 First we need to check which file system the external hard disk has, FAT32 or NTFS ?. Connect your external hard drive to your computer.

2 Go to the external hard drive.

You can use Windows Explorer and then look in "My Computer" or "This PC".

3 Right-click on the drive and choose "Properties".

4 Now look at "File system".

If the file system is FAT32 then the Ps3 will recognize the drive and it's ready to use, but if it's NTFS then we need to format the disk first.

Formatting the disk will erase all files on it, so it's best to first create a backup of all your files.

Windows

  1. Open "Windows Disk Management". In Windows 7: click "Start", right-click on "Computer", click on "Manage" and then click at the left sidebar on "Disk Management" (under Storage). In Windows 8: Right-click on "Start" and choose "Disk Management".
  2. Right-click on the drive and choose "Format".
  3. Choose "FAT32" at "File System".
  4. Do not select "Perform a quick format" or "Enable file and folder compression".
  5. Click on "OK" to start formatting.

Mac Os X

  1. Open "Applications".
  2. Open "Utilities".
  3. Open "Disk Utility".
  4. Select the drive and click on "Erase".
  5. Select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as the file system type.
  6. Click on "Erase" to start formatting.

5 Open your external hard drive and create three folders with the names VIDEO, MUSIC and PHOTO in uppercase.

6 Move or copy all the files into the correct folder.

7 Disconnect the hard drive from your computer.

8 Connect the external hard disk to one of the two usb ports at the front of your Playstation 3.

9 Turn on your Ps3.

10 Go in the main menu to:

11 Press with the X button of your controller on "USB Device".

12 Press with the X button of your controller on the video, movie, track or photo to play or view.

Note! Reduce the file size of large files that exceed 3.9 GB, because FAT32 has a limit of 3.9 Gigabytes per file.
