How to mute the PS5 controller microphone

Method 1: Use the physical mute button

The mute button is right below the PS button on your controller.

1. To mute: Tap the button once. It will glow solid orange.
2. To unmute: Tap the button again. The light will turn off.

Note: A microphone icon with a slash through it also pops up in the top-right corner of your TV to confirm you're muted.

Method 2: The "mute everything" shortcut

If your phone rings or someone walks in, you can silence your PS5 (mic and TV/headset audio) with one hand.

• Hold the Mute button for 2 seconds.
• The button will start pulsing orange.
• Your microphone is now muted, and all game/system sound is silenced.
• To restore sound: Tap the button once.

Method 3: How to mute the mic permanently

Tired of muting your microphone every time you turn on the PS5? You can set it to start muted by default.

1. Open Settings (the gear icon at the top right).
2. Navigate to Sound.
3. Select Microphone from the left menu.
4. Change Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute.

Tip: Even with this on, you can still unmute yourself by tapping the mute button.

Bonus: How to mute the controller speaker

Sometimes the problem isn't the mic. It's the controller speaker. The chirping, the voice prompts, all of it. To silence it:

1. Press the PS button on your controller.
2. Select Sound from the bottom menu.
3. Select Controller Speaker.
4. Slide the volume all the way to the left to mute it.
