How to mute the beep sound on PS5 (the "stealth mode" guide)
Since the launch of the PlayStation 3, that high-pitched "beep" has been the universal signal that a console is powering on. While iconic, it’s also remarkably loud—especially at 2:00 AM when you're trying to squeeze in a quiet session of Grand Theft Auto VI. For years, gamers had to just live with it, but the PS5 finally lets you take control of the noise.
Whether you want to lower the volume so it’s less jarring or completely disable the sound for a "stealth" startup, the settings are now built directly into the console’s firmware. No hardware mods or voided warranties required.
Is your PS5's beep waking up the whole house?
- Want to turn on your console without announcing it to everyone?
- Does the loud chime startle your pets or sleeping family members?
- Just looking for a more "minimalist" and quiet tech experience?
- Running a PS5 Pro or Slim and want to customize your setup?
Shhh... let’s get those settings changed.
Note: This setting applies to the physical beep coming from the console hardware itself, not the sound coming through your TV or headset. Turning this off will make your PS5 virtually silent when powering on or entering Rest Mode.
How to mute or adjust the startup beep volume
You can choose to either lower the volume of the beep or turn it off entirely. Here is the path to the "Beep Sound" menu:
- From the home screen, navigate to Settings (the gear icon in the top right).
- Open System.
- Select Beep and Light.
- To silence it completely: Turn on the Mute Beep Sound option.
- To just make it quieter: Select Volume and choose between High (Standard), Medium, or Low.

Tip: If you set the volume to "Low," it’s often quiet enough to satisfy the console's "handshake" without being heard in the next room. It's a great middle ground!
The "Remote play" exception
Interestingly, if you turn on your PS5 using Remote Play (via your phone, PC, or a handheld device like the PlayStation Portal), the console may still beep unless you have explicitly enabled the Mute Beep Sound toggle in the steps above.
If your goal is a 100% silent startup regardless of how you turn the machine on, Muting is the only foolproof option.
Frequently asked questions
Does muting the beep affect the console's health?
Not at all. The beep is simply a cosmetic audio cue. Muting it doesn't affect your fan speed, performance, or the console's ability to alert you to actual hardware errors (which are usually shown via the pulsing light bar colors).
What about the beep when I insert a disc?
On current firmware, muting the "Beep Sound" covers the startup, shutdown, and Rest Mode transitions. However, some mechanical sounds (like the disc drive spinning up) are hardware-based and cannot be silenced through software.
Can I change the "Beep" to a different sound?
As of now, Sony only allows you to change the volume or mute the sound. There is no official way to swap the beep for a custom sound effect or a different chime.
