How to block someone on Gmail who hasn't emailed you

Gmail’s standard Block button only appears inside an open email, which means you can't use it if a sender hasn't emailed you yet. Fortunately, you can easily block any email address ahead of time by creating a custom filter that sends their future messages straight to the trash.

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Click the settings button (gear icon).
  3. Click See all settings.

  4. Click Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  5. Click Create a new filter.

  6. Enter the email address you want to block in the From field.
  7. Click Create filter.

  8. Check the box for Delete it.
  9. Click Create filter again to save it.

The email address is now blocked.

Note: Even though the filter option is labeled Delete it, Gmail actually moves these future messages directly to your Trash folder. They will remain there for 30 days before being permanently erased, giving you a safety net if you ever need to recover a message.
