How to open ZIP, RAR, or 7Z files on Windows 11
Windows 11 has always been able to open ZIP files. Starting with version 23H2, it can also open and extract RAR, 7Z, and TAR files without extra software. Right-click the file, choose Extract All, click Extract, and you are done.
ZIP, RAR, and 7Z are ways to bundle several files into one smaller file so it takes less space and is easier to share.
This works on Windows 11 version 23H2 (build 22631) or later. To check, go to Settings > System > About and look under Windows info or Windows specifications. If you see 22H2, you need to update through Windows Update.
Extract a ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file
- Open File Explorer. Click the folder icon on the taskbar, or press Windows + E.
- In File Explorer, go to the ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file.
- Right-click the file.

Click Extract All.
- Click Extract.
The files are now in a folder next to the original.
If the file is password-protected, Windows 11 cannot open it. You will need WinRAR or 7-Zip for that.
