Windows Phone provides a few colors that can be used to customize the start screen tiles.

But:

Having a home screen with only solid-colored tiles can look boring.

Fortunately, using an image as the background for the tiles is possible for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile smartphones.

This looks nice, because the start screen tiles will fit together like puzzle pieces to display the full image and on Windows 10 Mobile you can also set the image on the background, so that the tiles become transparent.

If you're still using Windows Phone 8, then you should upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1.
