This tutorial will show you step by step how to set and use MP3 music songs as custom message tones on a Windows Phone 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile smartphone.

This tutorial should work for all Windows Phone 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile smartphones, such as the Nokia and Microsoft Lumia 435, 520, 530, 532, 535, 550, 620, 625, 630, 635, 638, 640, 650, 720, 730, 735, 830, 920, 925, 930, 950, 950 XL, 1020, 1320, 1520 and all other types.

How to Set & Use MP3 as Message Tone on Nokia & Microsoft Lumia Windows Phone 8 & 8.1

Method 1: PC & USB Cable

1. Connect your Windows phone with a USB cable to your PC.

2. Go to the location on your computer where the music is stored.

3. Select the song(s).

4. Right-click on the selected song(s) and choose "Copy".

5. Go to "Windows Phone" on your computer.

6. Open "Phone".

Note: If "Phone" doesn't appear, then unlock your smartphone (lock screen).

7. Open the "Ringtones" folder.

8. Right-click in the "Ringtones" folder and choose "Paste" to copy the songs into this folder.

9. When you're done you can disconnect your smartphone from your PC.

10. Take your smartphone and open "Settings".

11. Open "ringtones+sounds".

12. Tap on "manage app sounds" located at the bottom.

13. Tap on "Messaging".

14. Tap on the "Notification sound" bar.

15. Tap on the song you want to use as message tone.

16. Close settings.

Method 2: App

If the MP3 song you want to use as your new message tone is already stored on your smartphone, then you will need to use the Ringtone Maker app from Microsoft Mobile.

1. Open Windows (app) Store.

2. Search for "ringtone maker".

3. Install "Ringtone Maker" from Microsoft Mobile.

Note: If the app doesn't appear in the search results, then search for "ringtonemaker" without the space in between.

4. Open "Ringtone Maker".

5. Tap on "pick a song".

6. Tap on the song you want to use as a message tone.

7. Select 40 seconds of that song.

8. If you want to listen to how your new message tone will sound, then tap on the play button.

9. Tap on the save button to save the new custom message tone.

10. Close the app.

11. Open "Settings".

12. Open "ringtones+sounds".

13. Tap on "manage app sounds" located at the bottom.

14. Tap on "Messaging".

15. Tap on the "Notification sound" bar.

16. Tap on the song you want to use as message tone.

17. Close settings.
