Windows 7 just keeps on checking for updates and it never ends.
There are probably a lot of people who have given up and therefore stuck with an insecure PC because they will miss all the latest important security updates.
On the Internet, you can find several solutions, but not everything seems to work for everyone.
I've found a solution through InfoWorld that really works.
And:
After applying these fixes, my Windows 7 PC finally began to find, download and install updates.
With these fixes, I got Windows Update in Windows 7 working again, without having to dig into the Windows Registry.
I will show you step by step how to fix a slow, not working Windows Update in Windows 7.
And now:
Windows 7 update stuck on "checking for updates" (solution)
You will need a newer version of the Windows 7 servicing stack, KB3020369 (April 2015) or KB3177467 (September 2016).
Chances are that you already have them (or one of them), or you didn't receive any updates since April 2015.
You can check this by looking at the Windows Update history. To do this, open Windows Update and click on View update history located at the left.
If you already have the KB3020369 and/or KB3177467 servicing stack-update(s), then you can skip the first 7 steps and continue with step 8.
1. Download the Windows 7 servicing stack-update KB3020369.
Note: You will need to know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows and download the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of the update.

- Download KB3020369 for Windows 7 64-bit here (Official Microsoft website).
2. Restart your PC.
3. Disconnect from the internet (unplug the internet cable from your PC or turn off Wi-Fi).
4. Double-click on the downloaded KB3020369 file to start the installation.
5. Follow the instructions to install the update.
6. After the installation is finished you will need to restart your PC.
7. Connect to the internet (plug the internet cable into your PC and/or turn on Wi-Fi).
8. Download the Windows 7 servicing stack-update KB3172605.
Note: You will need to know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows and download the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of the update.

- Download KB3172605 for Windows 7 64-bit here (Official Microsoft website).
KB3172605 is the update that will make Windows Update work again.
9. Restart your PC.
10. Disconnect from the internet (unplug the internet cable from your PC or turn off Wi-Fi).
11. Double-click on the downloaded KB3172605 file to start the installation.
12. Follow the instructions to install the update.
13. After the installation is finished you will need to restart your PC.
14. Connect to the internet (plug the internet cable into your PC and/or turn on Wi-Fi).
15. Open Windows Update and check for updates.
On my PC, it took a few minutes (instead of hours with no result) to check for updates and then it started to download updates.
After the updates where downloaded and installed, I needed to restart Windows, check for updates again, install the recommended updates, restart Windows again, check for updates again, etc. But in the end, my Windows 7 PC is up-to-date!
Now:
I know that not all solutions work for everyone who suffers from a slow, non-functioning Windows Updates.
But:
This solution was the one that worked for me (and many other people) and got Windows Updates in Windows 7 working again.
